The People’s National Movement is calling on the Election and Boundaries Commission to declare as invalid the candidacies of three United National Congress members who attempted to qualify to contest the elections as members of the Congress of the People in violation of the EBC rules.

The Election and Boundaries Commission’s (EBC) rules, 7-13, Chapter3 “Nomination of Candidates” 6.(5), states “Where a candidate represents a political party, a letter is presented stating that he/she is a member of the party and the candidate for the electoral district.”

And also, “A Candidate stands nominated when in the case of a party candidate, he/she present a letter from the party confirming his/her membership and stating that he/she is the candidate for the electoral district.”

In has come to the understanding of the PNM that the three well-known UNC candidates for the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation falsely alleged that they were members of the Congress of the People and at the time of their registration were not valid members of the Congress of the People.

The PNM also condemns the attempt by the COP General Secretary. Attorney Clyde Weatherhead, to deliberately misinterpret the law which says that the candidate must be a member of the Political party which he is seeking to represent.  The PNM notes that the COP General Secretary was unable to confirm that the candidates in question were members of his party.

As a political party which has contested every election in all districts since 1956, the PNM sees the latest episode as the danger of putting the country’s affairs, whether at Local or Central Government level, in the hands of a pick-up side which gathers and discards members on the basis of political convenience in defiance of the law.

The candidates were seeking to represent Caura/Paradise/Tacarigua. D’Abadie/Carapo and Five Rivers/Lopinot and were, respectively; Sookdeo Prakash Bharath, J-Lyn Roopnarine and Diane Bishop.  The PNM is aware that there are several other candidates in other Regional Corporations who attempted to file nominations using similar sleights of hand.

The law is clear on the candidacy and the PNM awaits confirmation by the Election and Boundaries Commission before embarking on its next step.
